High School and College

Posted in Group:

I am 15 and a freshmen in high school. I can make words but they are not always clear and I am in a wheelchair at school (except gym) but walk at home. I just started gym two days ago and it really has been nothing but talking and relaxing, the activities start Monday. They are going to play: Football, Archery, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, Golf, Hockey, Lacrosse, Pilates, Soccer, Rugby, Team Handball, Tennis, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball, Weight Training, and Yoga. I know that I am not going to be the star athlete in my gym class, but I don't want to end up in a situation where I am in a corner doing something separate. They do offer adaptive physical education but that might cut into my academics and my parents do not want that. I am always going to have a male aide with me. Any ideas? Also, I am having a tough time making connections in school. I talked to my guidance counselor and my health aide about it and they asked me to get my work done and get good grades before they help me. My aide promised me that by the time I am a senior I'll have tons of friends. I talk to some people I know from middle school online which is great. A boy the other day talked to me in my math class and a girl asked me for help on a crossword puzzle. They always say that every year it gets better. My aide even promised me, shook my hand on it that I will have so many friends by the time I am a senior. Is there anyone who has been lonely freshmen year and it has gotten better? Also, my mom is saying that I have to move when I get out of high school to a place where there is a college that has a good college for physically disabled people. The nearest one is in Pennsylvania, I live in Connecticut and so does my father. My father says that he will not permit my siblings to move out of state. I know that I am on my own in college but the thought of not seeing my siblings for four years is unthinkable. Thanks any solutions?

Rdouga,
Hope you are doing well. You are dealing with a lot right now. I know it seems really hard and it is. We all want to be accepted, have friends and live the life we want and dream of.
Make that happen for yourself. You can. Be positive, outgoing and fearless. Not everything will work out the way you want it to, but in the end you will be more sucessful than you can imagine. Focus on the things you can do and do them to the best of your abilities.
I know you may not want to leave your family, but you will have the privilege to go out on your own. To see other places and meet people that can help you get to where you want to go in life. Don't be afraid. Be a warrior.

Hey rdouga,
I, too, am from Connecticut, and have ventured down to North Carolina to go to college. My parents wanted me to stay in state, but I told them no way! But, since you will want to stay there, look into Southern Connecticut State. Hang in there for now, have fun being in school, you probably are the most popular student there. Having CP is a challenge, but not too big to be conquered!

It's been getting somewhat better. I joined a youth group a few weeks ago and the people there are extremely nice. I get to get out of my chair during the activities and they have small group in which we help each other with our problems and pray for each other that it gets better. I have been on vacation which makes me feel so much warmer now that I am away from school. I am getting more freedom and getting the things that I need. I am going by myself to youth group next week and I am not by myself for a long period of time that often. I got a "D" on my mid-term exam because I did not get enough time to complete the test. I talked to the director of special education about it and all they did was apologize. I talked to my parents about it and they said that it all was a lot of miscommunication. I am hoping that all goes well next week and I have a good time.
